The recent advances on the developments of Wireless and Internet technologies
have generated increasing interest in the diffusion and processing of
geo-referenced data. Wireless and Internet devices also offer new ways of
accessing and analyzing geo-spatial information. Consequently, new challenges
and opportunities have been provided to the GIS research community.
This workshop is intended to provide an up-to-date review of advances on
recent development of Web and Wireless Geographical Information
Systems (W2GIS).
This workshop follows the successful 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 editions, held in
Kyoto, Singapore, Rome and Seoul respectively.
We invite submissions that address both theoretical and technical
issues of W2GIS.
Reports on implementations are particularly welcome. Suggested topics include,
but are not limited to as long as they address issues related to W2GIS:
- Conceptual and logical models for W2GIS
- Data management and data retrieval methods
- Geographical search engines and web services
- Digital geographical libraries
- W2GIS query languages and interfaces
- 2D and 3D information visualization
- Exploratory cartography and interfaces

Papers must be written in English. Each paper should be limited to
5000 words and
submitted via http://lbd.epfl.ch/e/conferences/w2gis05 in PDF file.
Each paper must
include a short abstract and a list of keywords indicating subject
classification.
The full names and addresses of the authors should be printed only on
the title page.
The author who is the contact person should be identified as such.
Acceptance of a
paper means an obligation for at least one of the authors to attend
the conference
and present the paper. Authors of best/some selected papers will be
invited to submit
an extended version of their papers for inclusion in World Wide Web Journal or
International Journal of Web Emerging Technology.

2nd International Workshop on
Conceptual Modeling for Geographic Information Systems (CoMoGIS2005)

Purpose and Scope
The recent advances in remote sensing and GPS technologies have
increased the production and collection of geo-referenced data,
thus requiring the rapid development and the wide deployment of
various geographic information systems. With the popularity of
the World Wide Web and the diversity of GISs on the Internet,
geographic information can now be available via personal devices
anytime and anywhere. Nowadays GIS is emerging as a common
information infrastructure, which penetrates into more and more
aspects of our society, and converges with most areas in the IT
scenario, such as office automation, workflow, digital libraries,
Web searching, virtual reality, etc. This has given rise to new
challenges related to the development of conceptual models for GIS.
Recently several new approaches have been applied in the development
of geo-spatial systems to accommodate new user requirements.
The workshop on Conceptual Modeling for GIS is intended to bring
together researchers, developers, users, and practitioners carrying
out research and development in geographic information systems and
conceptual modeling, and fostering interdisciplinary discussions
in all aspects of these two fields. The workshop will provide a forum
for original research contributions and practical experiences of
conceptual modeling for GIS and will highlight future trends in this
area. Therefore we invite submissions that address theoretical,
technical and practical issues of conceptual modeling for GIS.

Authors should submit original manuscripts via email to Dr. Michela
Bertolotto (michela.bertolotto(a)ucd.ie) as PDF files by June 20, 2005.
The ER2005 Workshop papers will be published by Springer-Verlag in the
LNCS series. Springer-Verlag publishes a full-text electronic version
of LNCS in parallel with the printed version, thus the electronic source
of accepted papers is required (Springer-Verlag strongly prefers the
LaTeX 2e format, but Word format is acceptable). See the Springer site:

Workshop Objectives and Scope
The unprecedented growth of electronic data and ever-increasing user
dependence on electronic data in today's world suggests that data should be
regarded as one of the most important assets of the users. On the other
hand, the last decade has witnessed tremendous increase in globalization.
This has created a strong need for global-scale data repository systems,
which store different kinds of user data of varying sensitivities and allow
their users transparent access to data. Such data repositories can be
significantly beneficial to users in several ways. For example, they can
facilitate users in accessing any data in real-time from anywhere at
anytime. Moreover, they can serve as data warehouses and provide archival
data storage services to their users. Additionally, given the tremendously
large amounts of data that can be expected to be in such repositories, data
mining can also be done on these repositories to identify and analyze
trends. Due to their tremendous usefulness, these global-scale data
repositories have opened many new and interesting avenues for research in
academia as well as in industry. The objective of this workshop is to bring
together researchers from academia and industry to discuss novel and
interesting solutions to the problems currently faced by global-scale data
repositories.
In the context of the general theme of the workshop concerning global-scale
data management, suggested topics for this workshop include (but are NOT

Paper Submission Details
Authors are invited to submit original and previously unpublished research
contributions in English. Papers should be formatted according to IEEE
guidelines (10 point font, two-column format), with the maximum permissible
length for a paper being 5 pages in the above format. All papers will be
reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee. Submitted
papers will be carefully evaluated based on originality, significance,
overall impact, technical depth and clarity of presentation.

IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications
PEER-TO-PEER COMMUNICATIONS AND APPLICATIONS
Two popular, well-established service access models are the
client-server model and the push model. In the former model, the user
makes a request to get the desired data. In the latter model, servers
push data on to the clients when certain conditions are satisfied. In
both the models, it is the server that acts as a central point of
control and data distribution. In both the models, there is no
interaction between users. An emerging third model of data access is
the peer-to-peer (P2P) model, where a user is aware of other users and
users communicate among themselves to access and share data. The idea
in the P2P model is twofold: (i) plain sharing of information among
users, and (ii) work in tandem with the client-server model for
performance reasons. So far, P2P networks have relied on the fixed
Internet infrastructure, and service accessibility has been their main
objective. However, mobility due to wireless connectivity will provide
new opportunities and challenges to the designers of P2P networks.
Also, peers need not be identical in their computing and communication
capability and willingness to participate in P2P services.
Therefore, the new challenges in designing P2P systems will include
communication protocols to support P2P communication in a
heterogeneous network including the fixed Internet, wireless LANs, and
the 3G systems. Those protocols must be aware of the quality of
service (QoS) needs of the users. Efficient discovery of contents will
be of importance because search involves sending messages on the
network. This problem gains additional importance in a wireless
network, where bandwidth is at a premium. There may be a need for
peers to form an ad hoc network so that less service is demanded from
the infrastructure-based part with the objective of localizing
communication and reducing the cost. When peers apply their local
constraints on participation, there will be additional challenges on
the above design aspects. Also, because of the open nature of P2P
networks, security will be a problem. There has been ongoing research
on the problems, but a great deal of work still remains to be done.
The goal of this issue is to provide a forum for the recent research
results on P2P systems with emphasis on P2P user applications and
middleware support. We plan to solicit papers in the following areas:
- Object location and storage
- Data replication strategies
- Index structure for resource discovery
- DDoS resilient P2P networks
- Resource conserving P2P communication
- Integration of P2P model with client-server and push models
- Search and routing in heterogeneous P2P networks
- Novel applications of P2P communication
Only original and unpublished research papers will be considered.
Prospective authors should follow the IEEE J-SAC manuscript format
described in the Information for Authors. Authors should submit their
papers in pdf format to knaik(a)swen.uwaterloo.ca according to the
