Progress in Informatics （http://www.nii.ac.jp/pi/）is an international
peer-reviewed journal published by the National Institute of Informatics,
Japan (NII), aiming at the promotion of research and development in the
broad area of informatics.
Progress in Informatics provides researchers and practitioners with a forum
to exchange cutting-edge results from research and development in those
areas such as foundations of informatics, information infrastructure
systems, software research, multimedia information, intelligent systems,
human and social information and research on research information. The
published articles consist not only of original research papers but also of
surveys and project reports which contribute internationally to the
progress of research and development.

「第２回生物学の知見に基づいた高度情報技術の確立に関する国際ワーク
ショップ（略称：Bio-ADIT2006）」の参加募集案内をお送りします。
Bio-ADIT は、その第１回が2004年1月にスイス連邦工科大学ローザンヌ校で
開催されました。今回、第2回目のBio-ADIT2006は、来年2006年の1月26日、
27日の両日、大阪千里中央のライフサイエンスセンターで開催されます。
３件の招待講演と、多数投稿された論文の中から選ばれた２２件の口頭発表、
８件のポスター発表が行われます。本ワークショップは、生物学の知見に基
づいた高度情報技術分野での新しい研究成果について発表の場を提供し、
次世代の情報システムを育成していくことを目指しています。
また、現在、生物学の知見に基づいた高度情報技術に関する応用と実験の
デモセッションの発表者を募集しております。

Bio-ADIT 2006 follows the success of the first workshop Bio-ADIT
2004 held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL),
Switzerland in January 2004. The workshop is intended to provide an
effective forum for original research results in the field of bio-
inspired approaches to advanced information technologies. It will
also serve to foster the connection between biological paradigms and
solutions to building the next-generation information systems.
In particular, the aim of the workshop is to explore and discuss
how biologically inspired approaches can help designing the next
generation of information systems which, like their biological counter
parts, will be capable of adaptation, self-organization, replication,
and self-repair.
Bio-ADIT 2006 has three invited talks, 22 oral presentations and
8 poster presentations that are selected by careful reviews.
The talks and presentations cover a large range of topics including
networking, robotics, evolutionary computation, neural computation,
biochemical networks, reconfigurable hardware, and machine vision.
The contributions range from basic research in biology and in
information technology, to more application-oriented developments
in software and in hardware.

Bio-ADIT 2006 reserves the Demo Session to demonstration of applications

Researchers are invited to submit short proposals that describe the
demonstrated systems and clarify the contribution of the demonstration to
this field. The proposals of two pages in PDF or PS format should be sent to

by the deadline of the demonstration proposal

Invitation
We invite you to submit papers by December 9, 2005 for the half-day workshop
within the ICDCS' 06 conference to be held in Lisbon, in July 2006. The proceedings
will be published only on CD by IEEE. The paper size should be up to 6 pages in
double columns, in font 10 points (the IEEE conference publication format).
More details on the workshop are given below.
Workshop Aim
The aim of this half-day workshop, within ICDCS 2006, is to explore the P2P
area of data and knowledge sharing [P2P/DAKS] for information intensive
applications. The objective is to blend concepts and ideas from the database
and AI domains in order to produce a sound basis for an effective P2P/DAKS
facility.
Recently the peer to peer systems have become a major area of new research
following the popularity of P2P file sharing systems (such as Napster, Gnutella,
OceanStore), which permit any computer (as a peer) anywhere to share information
from any other in the system, bypassing the need for any client/server facility.
This success has fired up a new challenge to build P2P systems that will permit
sharing of data and knowledge. However, in contrast to the file sharing systems
that cater largely for immutable objects with rare updates and very limited
heterogeneity, the data and knowledge sharing systems - by the very nature
of their contents - have to be more grainy, more volatile and perhaps more
heterogeneous. Therefore in addition to the issues already identified in
the file sharing systems, we also have here new issues - all of which
require appropriate and effective solutions for the P2P/DAKS environments.
Our objective to combine ideas from both the database and AI domains for
the most effective solution of the issues, together with our focus on only
information intensive applications, is a significant distinction of this
workshop from similar others (e.g. VLDB P2P workshops DBISP2P and the
multi-agent P2P workshops AP2PC).

The Review Process
This will follow the standard procedure for refereeing by the PC members, as in
the case of the main conference. The papers will be distributed to the WS PC
members, and the best papers selected based on at least two independent reports.
The authors will be informed of the outcome, and the successful authors will be
asked to send their revised (as suggested by the referees) papers within the
deadline for publication, as stipulated for the main conference.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems have emerged as an active research field that
combines principles from networking, database, distributed computing, and
information retrieval. Different from traditional client-server model, a
host node in a P2P system can act as both a server and a client, which has
significantly changed the way of online information sharing and distribution.
P2P techniques bear the potential to realize information systems that scale
to voluminous information on very large numbers of participating nodes,
while facing many fundamental research challenges for information management.
This workshop intends to bring together researchers and practitioners working
on P2P information systems from different disciplines. We invite papers that
facilitate better understanding of challenges of P2P information management,
apply ideas and techniques from different aspects, and propose innovative
solutions to those challenges. Topics of interest include, but are not limited
to:

Submission:
Original and previously unpublished technical papers are solicited. Papers
reporting original research, applications, development of prototypes,
industrial experiences, technologies and standards are welcome.
Submissions must not exceed 8 pages in IEEE conference paper format
(including references, figures and tables). All submissions should be submitted
electronically in Postscript or Adobe PDF format through the COCUS web site.
Detailed information can be found in the workshop website (www.p2p-im.org)
All paper submissions will be carefully reviewed by experts and returned to the
author(s) with comments to ensure the high quality of the accepted papers. The
authors of accepted papers must present their papers at the workshop. At least
one author of each accepted paper must be registered for the workshop in order
for that paper to appear in the proceedings and to be scheduled for presentation.
Publication:
The accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. The
conference proceedings will be published by IEEE Press and available online
through IEEE Xplore.

Title: Text Classification without Labeled Negative Documents

This talk presents a new solution for the problem of building a text
classifier with a small set of labeled positive documents (P) and a
large set of unlabeled documents (U). Here, the unlabeled documents
are mixed with both of the positive and negative documents. In other
words, no document is labeled as negative. This makes the task of
building a reliable text classifier challenging. In general, the
existing approaches use a two-step approach: i) extract the negative
documents (N) from U; and ii) build a classifier based on P and
N. However, none of the reported studies tries to further extract
any positive documents from U. In fact, intuitively, extracting
positive documents from U will increase the reliability of the
classifier. However, extracting positive documents from U is
difficult. A document in U that possesses the features exhibited in
P does not necessarily mean that it is a positive document, and vice
versa.
It is very sensitive to extract positive documents, because those
extracted positive samples may become noises.
The very large size of U and very high diversity exhibited there
also contribute to the difficulty of extracting any positive
documents. Thus, we propose a partition-based heuristic which
aims at extracting both the positive and negative documents in
U. Extensive experiments based on three benchmarks are
conducted. The favorable results indicated that our proposed heuristic
outperforms all of the existing approaches significantly, especially
in the case where the size of P is extremely small.
