Fourth International XML Database Symposium (XSym 2006)

The theme of the XML Database Symposium (XSym) is the convergence of
database technology with XML technology. The goal of this symposium is
to bring together academics, practitioners, users and vendors to
discuss the use and synergy between the above-mentioned technologies.
Many commercial systems built today are increasingly using these
technologies together and it is important to understand the various
research and practical issues. This symposium will provide the
opportunity to debate new issues and directions for research and
development work in the future.

Paper Submission:
Symposium submissions must generally be in electronic form using
Portable Document Format (.pdf), PostScript (.ps) or WinWord
(.doc). Papers should not be more than 15 pages in length. Papers
should be formatted according to the Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in
Computer Science (LNCS) guidelines.

The aim of this conference is to provide an international forum for researchers,

PUBLICATION
The proceedings of WISE 2006 will be published in two separate volumes by
Springer in its Lecturer Notes in Computer Science series (which is indexed by
SCI), one volume for all papers accepted by the main conference, and one volume
for all papers accepted by all WISE workshops.
A special issue of the World Wide Web Journal is scheduled in 2007 for publishing
extended versions of selected WISE 2006 papers.
YAHIKO KAMBAYASHI BEST PAPER AWARD
The WISE Program Committee will select the best paper from all submissions for this
prestigious award with US$1000.

The 10th ECDL will be held in Alicante (Spain) in September 2006. The
ECDL has become the major European Conference on Digital Libraries and
associated technical, practical and social issues, gathering
researchers, developers, content providers and users in the field.
Papers are invited on substantial, original and completed research,
applications and development that have not previously been presented
elsewhere and that make new contributions to all aspects of Digital
Libraries, including, but not limited to:
- Concepts of Digital Libraries and digital content.
- Collection building, management and integration.
- System architectures, integration and interoperability.
- Information organization, search and usage.
- Multilingual Information Access and Multimedia Information handling.
- User interfaces for Digital Libraries
- User studies and system evaluation.
- Digital archiving and preservation: methodological, technical and legal
issues.
- Digital Library applications in e-science, e-learning, e-government,
cultural heritage, etc.
The special topic of this edition of the ECDL Conference is "Towards
the European Digital Library", with the aim of emphasizing the
contribution of the European Digital Library research community (and
its liaisons with the international research community in general) to
the current efforts of the European Commission in this
direction. Papers focusing on this topic are particularly welcome.
Papers should present completed work rather than intended work, and
should indicate clearly the state of completion of the reported
results. Wherever appropriate, concrete evaluation results should be
included. Submissions will be judged on correctness, originality,
technical strength, significance and relevance to the conference, and
interest to the attendees. Reviewing will be managed by an
international Conference Program Committee which will also take final
decisions on the technical program.
Submission information

The full text of papers in English (maximum 12 pages in the Springer
LNCS format) is required at the initial submission stage for
review. In the spirit of digital libraries, all papers must be
submitted electronically via the ECDL 2006 Conference Management
System at
https://chair.dlsi.ua.es/webchair/inicial.php?id=8
Submissions must follow the guidelines for the LNCS format provided by
Springer (http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html)
We recommend the use of LaTeX2e for best results and easiest handling
of your documents (now and in the future), but Springer also provides
a template for Microsoft Windows. It is the responsibility of authors
to ensure that their submission is printable on a standard Postscript
printer.
For the initial full text submission for review, authors are requested
to submit the paper as a single pdf file. If this constitutes a
hardship, or in case of problems submitting the paper via the
web-based conference management review system, please contact the
program chairs by email (pc_chairs(a)ecdl2006.org) to arrange
alternative means of submission.
When accepted, final camera-ready version of papers are to be
submitted both in pdf and in source format (LaTeX, MS Word or
rtf). Detailed information will be provided with the acceptance
notification. Note that accepted papers MUST be presented by one of
the authors at the conference.

本シンポジウムは、来年度から情報工学専攻内に博士前期課程 (修士課程)
として新設されるユビキタス&ユニバーサル情報環境専修の活動の一環とし
て開催されるものです。今回は特に、人間を中心に据えた情報環境とその
実現のための人材養成に焦点をあててプログラムを構成致しました。
データベース応用領域の広がりやユビキタス社会の到来に伴い、データ工学
関連分野においても、広範なユーザを対象とし、人に優しい情報環境を実現
することが、これまで以上に重要な課題となって来るものと思われます。

本学は、平成17年度文部科学省科学技術振興調整費新興分野人材養成プログ
ラムの採択を受け、「ユビキタス&ユニバーサル情報環境の設計技術者養成」
に着手しました。このプログラムは、情報環境において、時間的・空間的制
約を解消するだけでなく、使いにくさの制約も解消して、誰もが自然に利用
できる満足度の高い情報環境を設計・開発できる技術者の養成を目指すもの
です。半年間の準備を経て、4 月より学生を迎えて指導するにあたり、情報
環境設計における先駆的研究者・教育者をお招きして招待講演をお願いする
とともに、人材養成を多角的視点から議論するためのシンポジウムを開催い

「i-schools: A Perspective on the Future of Computer and Information
Science and Engineerimg」
In this talk, I will review some of the challenges and opportunities
for educational programs in Computer and Information Science and
Engineering (CISE). Through the past three decades, the CISE area as
become a vast nexus of disciplines, though it is frequently equated
with Computer Science.
The CISE area is often seen as problematic with respect to educational
programs. In the US, there is periodic lamentation about downturns in
enrollments and graduations. After all, if information technology is
a key to the future, how could student interest ever wane or decline?
In my view, things are not so bad! Indeed, new ways of thinking about
the CISE area are already inspiring new programs and techniques, and
proving to be sources of increased student interest. I will discuss
several initiatives and techniques, focusing on the concept of
"i-school" as it has been developed by a consortium of universities

The Middleware conference is a forum for the discussion of important
innovations and recent advances in the design and construction of
middleware. Middleware is distributed-systems software that resides
between the applications and the underlying operating systems, network
protocol stacks, and hardware. Its primary role is to functionally
bridge the gap between application programs and the lower-level
hardware and software infrastructure in order to coordinate how
application components are connected and how they interoperate.
Following the success of past conferences in this series, the 7th
International Middleware Conference will be the premier event for
middleware research and technology in 2006. The scope of the
conference is the design, implementation, deployment, and evaluation
of distributed system platforms and architectures for future computing
and communication environments. Highlights of the conference will
include a high quality technical program, invited speakers, poster
presentations, and workshops.
Submissions on a diversity of topics are sought, particularly ones
that identify new research directions. Middleware 2006 is not limited
to topics discussed in previous Middleware conferences. Authors
concerned about the appropriateness of a topic may communicate by
electronic mail with the program chair prior to submission.
The proceedings of Middleware 2006 will be published as a

Research papers are to be submitted electronically via the online
submission system: http://subm2006.middleware-conference.org/
Through this system, you will be requested to upload the file of your
paper (PDF format) to the conference server (please avoid bitmaps!)
Papers must not exceed 20 pages, including abstract, all figures, all
tables, and references. Papers should include a short abstract and up
to 6 keywords. Please also fill in the appropriate information in the
online form. Submitted papers should follow the formating
instructions of the Springer LNCS Style (please check the Information
for Authors page at Springer at http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs for
style and formatting guidelines). Submitted papers may not be
submitted for conference publication, journal publication, or be under
review for any other conference or journal.
Workshop proposals:
The Middleware conference traditionally includes a number of high
quality workshops which are co-hosted with the conference. In order to
continue this tradition, Middleware 2006 is soliciting proposals for
1-day workshops. Proposed workshops can be on any topic related to
middleware, but we are particularly seeking new workshops in emerging
new middleware areas.
The proposal (not exceeding three pages) should
include the following information:
* The title of the workshop
* A technical description of the workshop topic area
* A short description of the intended length and format of the workshop
* A brief statement of the relevance of the workshop to Middleware
* The names and e-mail addresses of the organizing committee
* A list of proposed program committee members
* Tentative dates for submission and notification of acceptance
Each workshop will organize their own publicity, submissions and
refereeing procedures, and provide their own web page. A link will be
provided to this web page from the Middleware 2006 web site. The
organizers of the workshop will ensure that all accepted papers are
peer reviewed. Accepted papers should be no longer than 6 pages in the
standard ACM format. As in previous years, the Middleware conference
organizers will provide companion proceedings covering all workshops
and plan to make all workshop papers available in the ACM Digital
Library. The workshop organizers can determine both the submission
dates and notification of acceptance dates for their
workshops. Camera-ready papers will be required by (tentatively) the
14th October 2006.

The 3rd SDM workshop builds upon the success of the first two workshops,
which was organized in conjunction with VLDB 2004 in Toronto, Canada and
VLDB 2005 in Trondheim, Norway.
Motivation
Although cryptography and security techniques have been around for quite
some time, emerging technologies such as ubiquitous computing and ambient
intelligence that exploit increasingly interconnected networks, mobility
and personalization, put new requirements on security with respect to
data management. As data is accessible anytime anywhere, according to
these new concepts, it becomes much easier to get unauthorized data
access. Furthermore, it becomes simpler to collect, store, and search
personal information and endanger people's privacy. Therefore, research
in the area of secure data management is of growing importance,
attracting attention of both the data management and security research
communities The interesting problems range from traditional ones
such as, access control (with all variations, like dynamic,
context-aware, role-based), database security (e.g. efficient database
encryption schemes, search over encrypted data, etc.), privacy
preserving data mining to controlled sharing of data.
This year, we will continue with a tradition to have a special session
devoted to secure data management in healthcare. Data security and
privacy issue are traditionally important in the medical domain.
However, recent developments and increasing deployment of IT in
healthcare such as the introduction of electronic health records
and extramural applications in the personal health care domain,
pose new challenges towards the protection of medical data. In contrast
to other domains, such as financial, which can absorb the cost of the
abuse of the system, healthcare cannot. Once sensitive information about
individual's health problems is uncovered and social damage is done,
there is no way to revoke the information or to restitute the individual.
In addition to this, the medical field has some other specific
characteristics, such as long-term value of medical data and
flexibility with respect to, on one hand confidentiality, and
on the other hand availability of medical data in the case of emergency.
Aim
The aim of the workshop is to bring together people from the security
research community and data management research community in order to
exchange ideas on the secure management of data. This year an additional
special session will be organized with the focus on secure and private
data management in healthcare. The workshop will provide forum for
discussing practical experiences and theoretical research efforts that
can help in solving the critical problems in secure data management.
Authors from both academia and industry are invited to submit papers
presenting novel research on the topics of interest (see below).

Paper submission
Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers that are
not being considered for publication in any other forum. Manuscripts should
be submitted electronically as PDF or PS files via email to
al_sdm05(a)natlab.research.philips.com Full papers should not exceed fifteen pages
in length (formatted using the camera-ready templates of Springer Lecture Notes
in Computer Science). We also encourage submitting position statement papers
describing research work in progress or lessons learned in practice
