Title: Analytics over Big Data for Operational Intelligence

Abstract
As sensors become pervasive, and as machines and devices become
increasingly interconnected (in the "Internet of Things"), huge volumes
of data are being generated and captured. Big data is characterized not
just by volume, but also by velocity (streaming, real-time data) and
variety (structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data of many
different types: logs, social media, text, files, images, video).
Analytics over big data hold the promise of improving business
operations by delivering actionable insights at the scale and speed
required by the business. Through scenarios drawn from a number of
industries, this talk will illustrate the need for a new analytics
architecture and platform that goes beyond traditional business
intelligence. I will describe some of the research challenges in
realizing such a platform, and I will introduce the research we are
starting to do in the newly formed Hitachi America Big Data Lab to
address some of these challenges and to build some representative big
data analytics applications.
