It serves as a forum for interesting discussions on ongoing research and new contributions. The conference addresses both experimental and theoretical research in the areas of ad hoc networks, sensor networks, mesh networks and vehicular networks. It focuses on all issues from link layer up to the application layer. The thirteenth edition of ADHOC-NOW will for the first time be organized in Benidorm, Spain, from the 22nd to the 27th of June, 2014. We seek original contributions as work in progress, experimental and theoretical research in Wireless Sensor, Ad-Hoc, Mobile and Wireless Networks. Submissions must not be published or under review for another conference or journal. Regular papers should not exceed 14 pages in LNCS format. Short papers must be limited to up to 4 pages in LNCS format. The paper should provide sufficient detail to allow the Program Committee to evaluate its validity, quality, and relevance. Each accepted paper will be included in the conference proceedings, provided at least one author of the paper registers to present the paper at the conference. The main aim of the workshops is to provide an international forum for researchers to present their early research results and share experiences focused on specific research areas related to the main conference topics. Workshop proposals are solicited in all areas and topics related to wireless networking, mobile computing, mobile and wireless communications, pervasive computing and networking, and its services and applications. All papers accepted by the workshops will be included in the WiMob 2014 Proceedings published by IEEE. JAPAN 　　　　（ブロンズ）：デンソーアイティーラボラトリ　　　　　　　　　　　株式会社ビーコンＩＴ　　　　　　　　　　　SRA OSS, Inc. 　　　　　　　　　　　日本アイ・ビー・エム株式会社　　　　　　　　　　　株式会社きざしカンパニー協賛：ACM SIGMOD日本支部　　　日本MySQLユーザ会　　　ARG Webインテリジェンスとインタラクション研究会　　　Firebird日本ユーザ会【報告者：実行副委員長京都大学田島敬史】 2013年11月27日から28日の二日間，京都大学において，WebDB Forum 2013 が開催されました．WebDB Forum は，１．Web系，DB系における国内唯一の査読付き会議であること，２．企業，アカデミア，OSSコミュニティにまたがる交流を目的の一つとしており，協賛企業・団体からの技術報告やポスター展示等が行われることの二点を特徴としています．企業関係者との交流を目的の一つとしているため，これまで主に東京で開催されていますが，2013年は，同時期に京都大学で行われた国際会議 SocInfo 2013 と連携し，京都での開催となりました．例年，東京の企業からの参加者が多いことから，参加者の大幅減も覚悟していましたが，252名（一般82名，学生96名，スポンサー・協賛団体枠66名，招待者8名）と，東京開催だった前年の人数よりは減ったものの，予想を超える多くの方にご参加いただくことができました．これが，WebDB Forum というイベントが企業コミュニティにも十分定着したことを示しているのか，それとも，開催地はそれほど影響しないということなのか，あるいは，広報が良かったのか，はたまた，京都という開催地が比較的好評だったということなのかは，直ちには判断できないのですが，今後のWebDB Forum の運営の上でご参考になればと思います．プログラム構成は，おおむね，ここ数年の WebDB Forum を踏襲し，招待講演 1件，招待講演者の講演とパネル討論からなる特別セッション2件，一般論文発表，協賛企業による技術報告，一般論文や協賛企業・団体のポスター展示を兼ねて行うレセプション，協賛企業による常設展示というものでした．また，今回も，例年の WebDB Forum 同様，プログラム委員会が選定する論文賞と優秀な発表を行った学生に与えられる学生奨励賞に加え，各協賛企業が選定する企業賞の表彰を行いました．私の個人的な意見になりますが，企業からの技術報告と，この企業賞があるところが，WebDB Forum の最も特徴的なところではないかと思います．企業賞に関しては，必ずしも賞に選ばれなくても，WebDB Forum で発表することによって，企業からの選考委員の方々に研究を見ていただく機会を得ることになりますので，企業で応用可能な研究を指向している研究者の方にとっては，貴重な機会となるものと思います．ご興味をお持ちの方は，是非，次回の WebDB Forum への投稿をご検討ください．最後になりましたが，ご協賛いただきました数多くの企業に，あらためて御礼申し上げます．また，フォーラムの運営にご尽力いただきました実行委員，プログラム委員の皆様，そして，全ての講演者，参加者の皆様にもこの場を借りて，御礼申し上げます． (田島敬史京都大学国際高等教育院教授) -------------------------------------------------------------------- ■２■ SocInfo2013 開催報告 Adam Jatowt (京都大学特定准教授) The 5th International Conference on Social Informatics (SocInfo2013) has been held at Kyoto University, Clock Tower from November 25th to 27th, 2013 (http://www.socinfo2013.org) SocInfo is an interdisciplinary venue for researchers from computer science, informatics, social sciences, and management sciences. This year, SocInfo 2013 was co-located with WebDB Forum 2013. As a PC co-chair, I was responsible for collecting and reviewing papers, interacting with other organizers and keynote speakers, as well as, managing the process of selecting best papers. It was a novel kind of experience for me, since SocInfo conference has a highly inter-disciplinary character bridging social and computer sciences. We had a chance to listen to keynote talks by Yoshiaki Hashimoto from the University of Tokyo, Paul Resnick from the University of Michigan, and Irwin King from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Professor Hashimoto outlined recent trends related to watching TV and using Internet in Japan based on surveys conducted on over thousand respondents. According to his findings, the time spent on watching TV as well as on reading traditional, print newspapers has decreased, while the time spent using Internet and, in particular, mobile Internet has increased over the last years across most of the age groups. Furthermore, younger people become less interested in politics and events happening in the world, while spending more time on social communication using the Internet. Paul Resnick discussed the issues related to political polarization and the exposure to political opinions in the context of recommender systems. Finally, in the last keynote Irwin King talked about the interplay of Social Computing and Big Data focusing on social and location recommendations that can be used for a wide-range of applications and services in the era of Big Data. This keynote was shared with WebDB Forum 2013 so both the attendants of SocInfo2013 and WebDB Forum could listen to the talk. Two best paper awards were given to "Follow My Friends This Friday! An Analysis of Human-generated Friendship Recommendations" authored by Ruth Garcia Gavilanes, Neil O'Hare, Luca Maria Aiello and Alejandro Jaimes and to the paper: "Automatic Thematic Content Analysis: Finding Frames in News" by Daan Odijk, Bjorn Burscher, Rens Vliegenthart and Maarten de Rijke. The first paper described the results of large scale study of human-generated friendship recommendations in Twitter. The second paper introduced automatic classification of news according to the four generic news frames: conflict, human interest, economic consequences, and morality, which define the perspective or central organizing ideas, of news articles. SocInfo 2013 included also three satellite events: "Workshop of Quality, Motivation and Coordination of Open Collaboration", "International Workshop on Histoinformatics" which was co-organized by me, and a tutorial entitled: "Towards a Spatial and Temporal Representation of Social Processes" given by Christophe Claramunt. As for the statistics, the conference received 103 submissions of which 94 were full paper submissions and 9 demonstration paper submissions. After review process (with an average of 3.63 reviews per paper) 23 full-length papers, 15 short papers, and three demo papers were accepted. More than 100 participants attended the conference; many of them came from abroad. The next edition of the conference will be organized in Barcelona (http://socinfo2014.org/) from Nov. 10th - 13th, 2014 and is going to be hosted by Yahoo! Labs. (Adam Jatowt 京都大学大学院情報学研究科特定准教授) -------------------------------------------------------------------- ■３■ iiWAS2013&MoMM2013に参加して吉江修 (早稲田大学教授) 「国際会議のために我々が海外に出かけるのではなく，ここインドネシアで国際会議を開き，世界中から人を呼ぼう」．当時Gadjah Mada大学に籍を置き Ph.D.の取得を目指していたIsmail Khalilと，彼のadvisorでシンガポール国立大学准教授Stephane Bressanが辿り着いたアイデアであった．15年ほど前のインドネシアの大学人にとって，他国で開かれる国際会議に参加することは，旅費その他の制約から容易なことではなかった．しかし，インドネシアの学術面でのレベルアップを果たしたいと願う二人の思いが，冒頭のような言葉に結びついたのである．こうして，1999年に第1回International Workshop on Information Integration and Web-based Applications & Services（iiWAS）がインドネシアのYogyakartaで開かれた．招待講演9件，一般講演10件から成る小さな会議であったが，周辺大学からも聴衆が集まり，熱心な眼差しで講演に聴き入る姿が印象的だった．以来，Workshopは Conferenceと名を変え，インドネシアだけでなく，オーストリア，マレーシア，フランス，ベトナムでも開催され，今回で15回目を数えるれっきとした国際会議に育った．会議のテーマは当初からWeb上のデータ統合やサービスを扱ったもので，時とともにマルチメディア，モバイルといったキーワードが強調されるようになり，その関連分野が別の会議MoMM（International Conference on Advances in Mobile Computing & Multimedia）として独立する等の出来事はあったが（両会議はこれまで併催されてきた），現在まで変わらず最先端の研究内容に出会える場となっていることは，当時の二人の先見性を示すものだと思う．さて，iiWAS2013とMoMM2013は2013年12月2日から3日間，オーストリアのウィーンで開かれた．会場は，ドナウ川の近くにあるthe University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien．都会型の大学でキャンパスらしいスペースがなく，校舎だけが街並みに同化されて建っている．全部で203件の研究発表が58セッションに分けて行われた．1日あたり平均約19セッションであるが，1セッションあたりの件数を抑えてあるので，興味のある発表を聴き逃すことなく，集中的な議論をするためには適正規模のように思う．48か国，164機関からの参加者219名のうち，日本からの参加者数は35名であった．発表はいずれも， 1件あたり3名以上の査読者による30.2%（iiWAS，MoMMともに）の採択率をクリヤした研究に関してである．そのような研究発表を聴いた後に，必要ならば発表者に話しかけて十分なコミュニケーションがとれるのは，1セッションに含まれる発表件数，コーヒーブレークの取り方を含め，研究者間の交流に重点をおいた会議だからであろう．優秀な研究には賞が贈られるが，iiWASと MoMMとを合わせた7つの賞のうち，最優秀学生賞は，日本人が受賞した．また，例年招待講演は興味深いものが多いが，今年の6件「Interoperability and Semantics - a reoccurring Issue?」「New Technologies: We have seen nothing yet」「Recent Studies in Privacy Preservation」「NoSQL databases - no panacea for Big Data processing」「Ameliorating Music Recommendation」「Mobile Mobility: The Road User Information Systems of the Future」も期待を裏切らなかった．オープニング，クロージング，welcome reception， conference dinnerを含め，全体的によくオーガナイズされた会議という印象を受けた．会議のproceedingsが，ACM International Conference Proceedings Seriesから発刊されること，また会議終了後に国際ジャーナルへの投稿が準備されていることも，投稿者にとって嬉しい点である． 12月のウィーンは寒かった．しかし，訪れるには最高の時期とも言える．会場での一日が終わった後，トラムと地下鉄をうまく使って繁華街に出れば，度々クリスマスマーケットの光景に出会うことができた．気軽な気分でサロンコンサートを聴くもよし，何しろここは音楽の都である．料理では，ウィーナーシュニッツェル（仔牛のカツレツ），ターフェルシュビッツ（ゆで牛肉）等が有名だが，私にとっての大きな収穫は，オーストリアの代表的な菓子であるザッハートルテを，双璧と言われるホテルザッハーとデメルの両所で食べ比べできたことだった…． iiWAS2014は2014年12月4日〜6日，MoMM2014は11月24日〜26日に，それぞれベトナムと台湾で開催される予定である．帰国の途につく私に，Ismailが「近い将来，日本でiiWASを開きたい」と話してくれた． (吉江修早稲田大学大学院情報生産システム研究科教授) -------------------------------------------------------------------- ■４■ AIRS2013に参加して佃洸摂 (京都大学博士後期課程) 2013年12月9日から11日に，シンガポールで開催されたAIRS2013に参加しました．AIRSはAsia Information Retrieval Societiesの略称であることからもわかるように，情報検索に関する研究が主なトピックです．総投稿数は109本で，27本の口頭発表と18本のポスター発表が採択されました．採択論文のうち7本が日本からの投稿であり，中国の9本に次いで多い本数でした．会場となったRendezvous Grand Hotelはシンガポールの中心地からほど近く，観光名所のひとつであるマーライオンにも徒歩で行くことのできる環境でした．そのような環境の中で，会議は3日間とも朝から夕方まで開催されました．口頭発表はすべてシングルセッションで行われたため，いずれの発表でも聴衆の数が多く，質疑等も活発に行われていました．近年のこの分野での国際会議では，ソーシャルネットワーク系の論文が多く発表される傾向があるように思いますが，AIRS2013では会議の名前の通り，検索モデルや検索の評価指標に関するトピックが多いという印象を受けました．Best Paperを受賞した「A Collaborative Document Ranking Model for a Multi-Faceted Search」は検索モデルに関する発表であり，参加者の投票によって決まるBest Oral Presentationを受賞した「Seven Numeric Properties of Effectiveness Metrics」は検索指標に関する発表であったこともこの会議の特徴を反映していると思います． AIRS2013では私も1件の口頭発表をする機会を頂きました．研究内容は検索結果の多様化に関するものです．検索結果の多様化に関する研究は多くの研究者によって行われてきましたが，私の研究ではクエリに関する各サブトピックの検索意図（InformationalやNavigational）を考慮して検索結果の多様化の手法を提案したことが新しい点です．サブトピックがInformationalな意図を持っていれば，そのサブトピックに関するページは多様化された検索結果中に複数ページ含まれても良いが，サブトピックがNavigationalな意図を持っていれば，そのサブトピックに関するページは多様化された検索結果中に 1ページだけ含まれるようにすることでより適切な多様化結果を求めることを目的としています．この研究は私がMicrosoft Research Asia（MSRA）でインターンをしていた際に行った研究であり，MSRAでこのテーマについて共に研究していた方々とも久しぶりに再会できました．会議中のアナウンスによれば，2014年のAIRSの開催地の候補は中国かマレーシアで，恐らくマレーシアになるのではないかとのことでした．AIRS2013に続いて，AIRS2014でも日本から多くの投稿があることを期待したいと思います． (佃洸摂京都大学大学院情報学研究科博士後期課程) =======================================================================
