Special Issue on Recent Advances on Internet of Things The Scientific World Journal, Hindawi (Impact Factor 1.730) Call for Papers In recent years, Internet of Things (IoT) has become increasingly ubiquitous. IoT enables a detailed characterization of the physical environment, as well as a rich set of interactions with the physical world. Therefore, IoT has the potential to revolutionize pervasive computing and its applications. The success of intelligent IoT highly depends on the system architectures, networks and communications, data processing, and ubiquitous computing technologies, which support efficient and reliable physical and cyber interconnections. Indeed, the realization of ubiquitous IoT poses several challenges about seamless integration, heterogeneity, scalability, mobility, and many others. This special issue solicits high-quality papers presenting original research results on IoT that are tightly related to pervasive and ubiquitous scenarios. Hope many of research staffs join. Time and Date : 17:30-18:30, Monday, December 2 Place : Room 1901, 19th floor,　National Institute of Informatics Title: SAP HANA and its Extreme Applications SAP HANA is an in-memory data platform that is deployable as an appliance, or in the cloud. At its core is an innovative in-memory relational database management system which makes full use of the capabilities of current hardware (RAM and multi-core CPUs) to increase application performance, to reduce cost of ownership and to enable new scenarios and applications that were not possible before. This speed-up processing capability from HANA could help existing applications to achieve the goals that would be considered impossible in the past , and also help to re-design and improve current business process flow in enterprise; especially on top of big data. In this talk, I describe the architectural design of SAP HANA and its solutions for big data. Finally, I will present some “extreme applications” on HANA, which are designed to deal extremely large data set or extremely complex problems (i.e. search space). Bio: Wen-Syan Li is a Vice President of SAP and the head of SAP Design & New Applications in China. He is responsible for building predictive analytics capability and its applications on SAP HANA in-memory computation platform; strategic customer co-innovation projects; as well as supporting HANA’s eco-system, startup program, customer adoption, and cloud infrastructures in China. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Northwestern University (USA). He also holds an MBA degree in Finance. His interests include databases, in-memory computing, data mining, optimization/scheduling, and developing novel extreme applications. Before joining SAP, he was with IBM Almaden Research Center (USA). Dr. Li has published more than 100 journal articles and conference papers in various areas

SIGIR 2013に参加して関洋平筑波大学３. 在外研修生活のあれこれ〜パリ滞在記〜河合由起子京都産業大学 ======================================================================= ■１■ VLDB 2013に参加して鬼塚真 (NTT 主幹研究員(特別研究員)) 2013年8月27日から29日にかけて，イタリアのリーヴァ・デル・ガルダにて開催された VLDB 2013 に参加してきました．3日目については前号で山本先生がご報告されているので，1,2日目を中心に報告いたします．今回のVLDBで印象的だったのは，Stonebraker 門下である Samuel Maden によるキーノートと，Daniel Adabi の Early Career Research Contribution Award の受賞であり，やはりシステム系の研究が強いという印象です． Samuel Maden のキーノートは，ビッグデータを扱う際に必要となる一連の3つの技術として，匿名化に関わるデータ処理フレームワーク(Monomi)，GPU を用いた高速データベース(mapD)，可視化技術(Scorpion)について発表をされていました．目新しさはないのですが，必要な技術を着実に研究していることを強く感じました．特に目を引いたのは，twitter データを地図上にリアルタイムに可視化する技術で，非常に分かりやすいデモになっていました．また，日米ともプライバシに関しては議論がありますが，実際に身近でビッグデータを扱う場合には匿名化は必要不可欠な技術になってきていると感じます．3日目のキーノートのトピックが differetial privacy であったことも，暗号化などの技術の重要性を表していると思います．一方，Daniel Adabi の受賞講演は長くてちょっと間延びした感がありましたが，端的に言えば HadoopDB の研究とベンチャであるHadapt の両立がいかに難しいか，と言う点についての発表で興味深いものでした．その他の一般セッションですが，Google の分散データベースである F1, Google のストリームエンジン，IBM のインダストリアルセッションは超満員でした．F1 の話は分散DBの再実装の話で機能全般を広く浅く説明していて新しさは皆無なのですが，IBM の C. Mohan が質疑において，「20年前に俺も同じことをやっていたぜ」というコメントは会場からウケていました．パネルも含めて，ビッグデータの熱はまだまだあるが MapReduce の発表は激減して数件程度になってきています．統計情報については，参加者数が 684名(うち日本からは約40名)で，投稿数は 559件のうち 127件が採録(うち47件は VLDB2014 で発表)とのことです．興味深かったのは採択率についてであり，全体平均は22.7%ですが，1st roundでの採録 (一発採録)率は3.4%，2回目以降での採択率は 86.4% となっていて，最初の投稿で reject にならなければ高い確率で採録になるということが分かります．分野ごとの投稿数などについては，投稿が最も多い分野は Tree, Graph, Semi-structured data であり 68件の投稿(16件採録)があったとのことで，2番目に多い Social systems and recommendation よりも2倍近い投稿数になっていました．また，今回のVLDBは発表時間が質疑を合わせて一件あたり18分と非常に短かったため，議論の質が下がってきたように感じました．その他，個人的なつながりの話ですと，昔一緒に XML ストリームの研究をしていたUC デービス大の Todd J. Green は現在 LogicBlox で Datalog エンジンを作っていたりという話や(Datalog が実際に使われている！)，ペンシルバニア大の Zack Ives がサバティカルで Google に滞在していたりというように，今更ですが企業と大学の連携が密接であることが印象に残りました．ここからは少し余談ですが，山本先生に続いてトラブルという話ですと，私も今回は3点ほどトラブルに見舞われました．1つ目は出国時で，成田空港が夏休みで混んでいて手続きや換金に時間がかかり過ぎてしまったため，航空会社の人に同行してもらってセキュリティチェックや出国審査をかなりのスピードでくぐり抜けて，どうにか搭乗することができました．2つ目はロストバゲージにあったことで，今回は二度目なのですが，どうにか帰国の二日前にはホテルに荷物が届きました．3つ目は帰国時で，空港まで行くバスが30分以上遅れてしまったので，バスを諦めて最寄駅までタクシーを使って，そこから電車に乗ってどうにか出発の1時間前ほどに空港に着くことができました(電車がもう一本遅かったら危なかったです)．今回の教訓は，1) VLDB は夏休みシーズンなので，特に朝は混むので早めに空港に入ること，2) トランジットが2-3時間はロストバゲージのリスクが高いのでできれば避けること，3) 海外バスの時間はあてにならないので代替手段は考えておくこと，かなと思います．最後になりますが，2014年の VLDB は中国の Hangzhou で，2015年はハワイで行われます(VLDB2013の会場でもハワイのアナウンスは盛り上がっていました)．中国の方の話ではHangzhou は非常に綺麗な観光地だそうです．来年は VLDB で発表の機会を得ることができたので，来年は Hangzhou で発表をしてきます．皆さん，VLDB@ハワイを目指しましょう． (鬼塚真 NTT ソフトウェアイノベーションセンタ/機械学習・データ科学センタ主幹研究員(特別研究員)) -------------------------------------------------------------------- ■２■ SIGIR 2013に参加して関洋平 (筑波大学助教) 2013年7月28日から8月1日にかけて国際会議 ACM SIGIR 2013が開催されました．会場はダブリンの Trinity College です．参加者は約600名で，大変盛況でした．アイルランドへの訪問は初めてでしたが，夏でも気候は涼しく，ホテル周辺は閑静な様子でした．グラフトン・ストリートと呼ばれるショッピングエリアに足を伸ばすと，パントマイムなどの大道芸人があふれており，独特の温かい雰囲気を醸し出していました．Trinity College には，毎日長蛇の列ができていて，最初は SIGIR の参加者の列と勘違いしたのですが，「ケルズの書」と呼ばれる9 世紀の福音書を見にあちらこちらから人が来ていることがわかりました． SIGIR は，情報検索を対象とした今回で36回の歴史を数える会議です．世界では，情報検索のコミュニティは大きく，参加している研究者たちも，機会があるごとに，「われわれは情報検索コミュニティだから…」と話しています．私は2002年，2006年，2007年に続いて今回が4回目の参加となりました．久しぶりの参加で感じたのは，アジアの参加者の圧倒的な増加，その中でも中国の研究者の活発さは，以前とはまったく雰囲気が異なるほどでした．また，日本人の参加者も数は中国ほど多くないのですが質は高く，今回は，プログラムチェアを酒井哲也先生(早稲田大学)，チュートリアルチェアを神門典子先生(国立情報学研究所)が務められています．そのチュートリアルでは，「Searching in the City of Knowledge: Challenges and Recent Developments」というトピックもあり，新しいテーマを取り込んでいる印象で，興味深かったです．会議のオープニングは，「Celebrating 20 Years of Web Search」というテーマで，JumpStation と呼ばれる最初の Web サーチエンジンの開発者や， Yahoo!/Microsoft/Google などでも活躍している情報検索の大御所が集まって，この20年の歴史について語り合うという内容で，大変興味深いものでした．バンケットは Croke Park Stadium と呼ばれるサッカー場で行われ，Irish Dance を研究者が踊るなどの余興もありました．ここで，その年の Best paper award が発表されるのですが，惜しくもノミネートとなった論文も発表されており，日本の酒井哲也さんの名前も発表されていました．ぜひ若手の方に後に続いてほしいと思います．Best paper となった論文は，Beliefs and biases in web search (Ryen White, Microsoft) というタイトルで，検索におけるバイアスという重要かつ斬新な切り口の内容でした． SIGIR は，長い年月を経てコミュニティを形成しているため，若手研究者が挑戦すると，温かく迎えてくださる雰囲気があります．日本人の研究者も，運営に関わっており，チャレンジしやすいと思います．また，7月31日のSIGIRビジネスミーティングで，SIGIR 2017 Tokyoを提案するプレゼンテーションがありました．2017年の開催地の選定結果は，来年のSIGIRで公表される予定ですが，東京で開催されることがあるかもしれません．ぜひ，日本人の若手も活発だな，と思わせる方々に，次々と発表していただければと思います． (関洋平筑波大学図書館情報メディア系助教) -------------------------------------------------------------------- ■３■ 在外研修生活のあれこれ〜パリ滞在記〜河合由起子 (京都産業大学准教授) 2013年4月から半年弱，在外研修として INRIA(フランスの国研)の Prof. Serge Abiteboul にご指導頂きました．Abiteboul先生とのディスカッションは緊張で決して満足なものとはいえませんでしたが，熱心に問題提起をしてくださり，回数を重ねるごとに深い議論につながり，研究を大きく前進することができたように感じます．また同時にトップレベルの方の研究スタイルを肌で感じることができたのは，在外研究の醍醐味でした．研究室の faculty や postdoc，他国からの visiting researcher との研究紹介や各国の研究事情，生活スタイルや気候に至るまで日常的に交流できたことも有意義でした．実のところ仏語が全く話せないにも関わらず，(気分だけは十分に)充実した在外研修を送れた者として「在外生活のあれこれ」についてご報告致します． INRIA は他国からの visiting researcher が多く，生活環境面でのサポート体制も充実しています．今回，ビザ，住まい，銀行口座，保険など，生活環境に関する一通りの手続きは，日本出国前に既に完了していました．ですので，パリの空港から直接契約した家具付きのアパルトメントに行き，大家の Ms. Marie-France との熱い抱擁(両頬接吻)を終えると，徒歩30秒のブーランジェリーで焼きたてのバケットを手に入れられました．ご老人の Ms. Marie はほんの少ししか英語が話せないので，body language にも限界があり(喜びは十二分に伝わってきます)，当初，困り果てました(事前のメールでのやり取りは息子さんが英訳代筆していたそうです)．そこで役にたったのが，google翻訳の仏英語変換です．お互いの翻訳結果を見ては「d'accord！(OK!)」そして抱擁，といった感じでした．Ms. Marie はこのソフトを気に入り(発音も結構完璧？)，その後のメールは仏語と(あきらかに）google翻訳されたものでした．面倒と言われる銀行口座の開設は既に完了しており，デビッドカード機能付きのカード (通称：Carte Bleue)と小切手帳も既に発行済みで，あとは入金だけでした．現金の支払いはブーランジェリーやベビーシッターさんぐらいで，あとはCBと checkでことたります．結論として，入国したその日から即研究開始も可能です (私は到底無理でしたが..)！実際に通った研究室は ENS という大学内にあるラボ棟でした．朝10時頃になるとAbiteboul 先生がドアをノックしてまわり，フロアのオープンスペースでエスプレッソ片手に30分程集まって雑談します．お昼になると，これまたAbiteboul 先生がドアをノックしてまわり，10名程度で連れだってカフェテリアに行きます．カフェテリアは入口が faculty 用と学生用レーンに分かれており，メニューは全く同じなのに学生は半額です．チーズやヨーグルト，フルーツといったサイドメニュー付きで大体8ユーロ(学生4ユーロ)ぐらいです．たまに夕方5時頃になるとまたまた Abiteboul 先生が研究室を覗いて下さって声をかけて下さいます．日本と違うのは会議がなく，皆さん講義と研究だけといった印象でした．もちろん個々で学生を含めたディスカッションは頻繁にされていて(壁が薄くて数時間も声が聞こえてくる)，隔週1回程度で招待を含めた講演が開催されていました．滞在中に一度だけ SIGMOD で発表する学生の発表練習もありました．さて，滞在したパリの住み心地はというと，食事はおいしく，歴史的遺産が多く点在しており，そして女性と子供に優しい！，ということで，ご家族でも安心して楽しめる滞在ができると思います．スーパーには，日本にはないサイズの野菜 (拳大のマッシュルーム等)や，皮ごと食べられる桃(美味しい！)，様々な種類のチーズ(ヤギチーズだけは無理でした)や生ハム等，パリの食卓では欠かせない品々で溢れています．また，鴨やムール貝，そしてフォアグラといった日本では高級食材も新鮮かつ安価に手に入れられ，堪能しました．もちろんワインもかかせません．日本ではあまり馴染みがないですが，夏には微炭酸な Vin rose (ロゼワイン)が人気があり，種類も豊富でした．休日の過ごし方は，美術館や博物館，教会，Chateau と事欠くことはありませんでしたが，一番は Jardin(公園)でした．深い緑の木々に囲まれた中にある大小様々な彫刻や噴水，常に季節の花々で溢れている園内を，ただ散歩するだけでもとても気持ち良いです．広い園内では，チェス(将棋も1席だけありました)や絵画，演奏会，カルーセル(パリには至るところにあります)，テニスや乗馬なども気軽に楽しめます．天気の良い休日になると，公園の広い芝生は，日光浴，読書，おしゃべりをしながら寛いでいる人達で溢れ，パリならではの光景が見られます．平日は勤勉に働き，休日は心身ともにリラックスできる環境が根付いていると感じました．今回語れなかった音楽祭や映画，お薦め美術館などもありますし，失敗談や心残り(スーパーで貯めたポイントカード！)も多々ありますので，今後フランスに在外されるチャンスのある方あるいは興味のある方がいらっしゃいましたら，少しはお役にたてるかと思いますのでお気軽にご相談下さい．もちろん研究室の様子も！最後に今回の在外研修にあたり，助言や激励，またご訪問下さった皆様に心より感謝いたします． (河合由起子京都産業大学コンピュータ理工学部准教授) =======================================================================

Call for Book Chapters Book Title: Cognitive networks: applications and deployments To be published by: CRC Press - Taylor & Francis Group, USA Objective of the Book Cognitive networks make use of several methods and techniques (such as machine learning techniques, decision making techniques, knowledge representation, network management, network optimization, problem solution techniques, and so on), to communicate the network devices to transfer data between them at any layer of the OSI model. They can be used to perceive the network conditions, or the user behavior, in order to dynamically plan, adapt, decide, take the appropriate actions, and learn from the consequences of its actions. Cognitive networks make use of the information gathered from the network in order to sense the environment, plan actions according to the input, take consciousness of what is happening in the environment, and take the appropriate decisions using a reasoning engine. Goals such as decide which scenario fits best its end-to-end purpose, or environment prediction, can be achieved with cognitive networks.
