Systems must aim to return important pieces of information and to minimise the amount of text the user has to read. These requirements are particularly important in mobile environments. 1CLICK-1 at NTCIR-9 only considered a Japanese task, but for this second round (1CLICK-2), we are expanding our scope to English. Moreover, while 1CLICK-1 considered only four query types (CELEBRITY, LOCAL, DEFINITION and QA), 1CLICK-2 will use a more fine-grained taxonomy comprising eight query types. Evaluation will be based on "information units" (iUnits), also often referred to as "nuggets". As in 1CLICK-1, we will use S-measure from Sakai/Kato/Song CIKM'11 http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/people/tesakai/cikmfp0040-sakai.pdf and will also consider developing new evaluation methods based on Pavlu et al. WSDM'12 http://dx.doi.org/10.1145/2124295.2124343 ### TASKS ### Japanese Main Task Given a Japanese query, return an X-character string that contain important information (X=500,140). This is basically the same as the 1CLICK-1 task. English Main Task Similar to the Japanese Main Task except that query and the output are in English. Query Classification Subtask (for Japanese and English) Given a query, classify it into one of the eight known query types. In addition to queries, the organisers will provide query suggestion data and baseline web search results to enhance repeatability and fairness, and to encourage newcomers to participate. ### IMPORTANT DATES ### April 2012 sample queries and nuggets released Aug 2012 test queries, query suggestions and baseline runs released Sept 2012 run submissions due Oct 2012 nugget match evaluation begins Jan 2013 nugget match evaluation ends Feb 2013 evaluation results released March 2013? draft papers due May 2013? camera ready papers due June 2013 NTCIR-10 ### HOW TO PARTICIPATE ### Task registration page will be available soon on the NTCIR-10 website (see below). Does "office" mean a Microsoft product or a workplace? (ambiguity) Does "harry potter" mean the books, the films or the character? (lack of specificity) Unlike traditional information retrieval where only relevance plays the central role, INTENT considers multiple possible intents for a given query and aims to balance relevance and diversity. The first round of INTENT at NTCIR-9 was concluded successfully, thanks to great research contributions from 17 research groups from seven countries/regions. At INTENT-1, it has been found that some successful systems were relevance-oriented, while others were diversity-oriented. NTCIR-10 will host the second round of INTENT (INTENT-2) to further clarify and hopefully solve the challenges of handling multiple intents. ### TASKS ### SUBTOPIC MINING subtask: Given a query, systems must return a ranked list of "subtopic strings" that represent diverse intents. In addition to Chinese and Japanese, this time we are running an English Subtopic Mining subtask as well. For this, we will syncronise with the TREC 2012 diversity task and share the topic set. DOCUMENT RANKNIG subtask: Given a query, systems must return a selectively diversified web search results. Unlike the TREC diversity task, we take the importance of intents and per-intent graded relevance into account when evaluating the participating systems. This time, we will include some "one item search" queries in the topic set, which probably do not require diversification. Can systems selectively and effectively diversify? 2011年12月6〜9日に開催された第9回NTCIRワークショップに参加いたしました。本ワークショップは情報アクセス技術の評価を皆で協力して構築することを目指しており、これまでのべ44の情報アクセスタスクが提案されてきました。第9回NTCIRワークショップでは下記の8タスクが行われました。・INTENTタスク：検索クエリからユーザの意図を推定し、検索結果に多様性を持たせる・1CLICKサブタスク：検索クエリに対して500文字程度のテキスト要約を出力する・VisExタスク：対話的・探索的な情報アクセス環境の評価方法を検討する・RITEタスク：テキスト間の含意（推論）・換言（同じ意味）・矛盾の認識を行う・CrossLinkタスク：異なる言語で書かれた文書間に潜在的に存在するリンクを発見する・GeoTimeタスク：時間と場所を問う質問に対してニュース記事から回答を発見する・PatentMTタスク：長くて複雑な特許関連の文章を翻訳する・SpokenDocタスク：話し言葉コーパスから文書を検索するまた、並列するEVIA 2011（The Fourth International Workshop on Evaluating Information Access）では情報検索評価ワークショップの関係者達が一同に会し、今後の情報検索評価のあり方について熱いパネルディスカッションが行われました。私達、京都大学チームは1CLICKサブタスクに参加し、口頭およびポスター発表を行って参りました。言語は英語、参加者は200人ほどで開催地は東京ですが国際会議のようなおもむきでした。参加者は共通した問題に取り組んでいるため、深い議論が行われていたと思います。 2012)が開催されますが、その2日目、3月4日の夜のセッションとしてBoFセッションが開催されます。BoFは「Birds of a Feather」の略であり、同じ興味を持つ人々が集まってあるトピックについて話し合うのが典型的なスタイルだそうです。DEIMでは、2009年にDEWSという名前からDEIM という名前に変更される際に、当時の実行委員長の石川佳治先生のご提案で始まりました。今回は、3つのBoFセッションがパラレルに開催される予定です。簡単に内容をご紹介いたします。興味のあるセッションがありましたら、是非、ご参加いただければと思います。 ○BOFセッション1（C会場：本館藤）・代表者氏名: 川島英之・パネリスト: EvAAL is a newborn initiative that aims at bringing together both academic and industrial research communities to work together on challenging and open problems in Ambient Assisted Living (AAL), with the purpose of evaluating different approaches and envisioning new research opportunities. The universAAL project organises this competition because it is an opportunity to find good solutions to relevant AAL challenges. To participate in the competition is therefore also an opportunity to influence the universAAL project. This competition is the second of several planned by universAAL to find good solutions to different challenges in the AAL domain. The whole initiative is organized as an AALOA project so that the AAL community is involved from the beginning and can more easily take over the continuation of EvAAL after the universAAL project finishes. During the competitions, we will collect large datasets that will be useful as benchmarks to researcher communities for the simulation and test of their solutions. These will be significant benchmarks, because they will have been collected in a realistic environment (the living labs). The competition is composed of two tracks and a final workshop: - Track 1 on Indoor Localization and Tracking for AAL, to be held on the 16-20 July, 2012 at the Smart House Living Lab of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain - Track 2 on Activity Recognition for AAL, to be held on the 9-13 July, 2012 at the CIAmI Living Lab in Valencia, Spain - EvAAL workshop to be held in conjunction with the AAL Forum on the 24-27 September 2012, Eindhoven, NL (http://www.aalforum.eu/) Track 1 - Indoor Localization and Tracking for AAL Localization is a key component for achieving context-awareness. Recent years have witnessed an increasing trend of location-based services and applications. In most cases, however, location information is limited by the accessibility to Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), largely unavailable for indoor environments. The aim of this competition is to award the best indoor localization system from the point of view of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) applications. Track 2 - Activity Recognition for AAL The automatic and unobtrusive identification of user's activities is one of the challenging goals of context-aware computing. Real-time monitoring of human activities could be a useful tool for many purposes and future applications such as lifelog, healthcare or entertainment. The aim of this competition is to award the best activity recognition system from the point of view of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) applications. *********************************************************************** Candidate competitors are invited to submit a paper describing their system to the appropriate track. A "competitor" can be any individual or group of individuals working as a single team, associated to a single or a number of organisations. The papers will undergo a peer review by the technical program committee members. The papers must include a description of the hardware, deployment, and algorithms and protocols used, and the description of the internal data produced and processed by the system. Each paper must not exceed 4 pages (including tables, figures, etc.) and must be submitted by April 8th, 2012 using the instructions that will be published on the EvAAL website (http://evaal.aaloa.org) The evaluation criteria for the competition, restrictions on the accepted technologies, and a description of the benchmarks are detailed in the technical annexes of this call (see notes below). Possible refinements of the annexes, also based on participating competitors comments, will be timely distributed to all participants. Depending on the number of accepted papers, it may be necessary to restrict participation in the competition to the best ranked papers, due to space/logistic constraints at the Living Labs. Selected competitors are admitted to the competition and inclusion of their paper in the proceeding under the three following conditions: 1. participate to the competition in July at the living lab hosting the track to which they participate; the organizers will set individual appointments for each competing team 2. present their work at the final EvAAL workshop that will be held in conjunction with the AAL Forum, (24-27 September 2012,Eindhoven,NL) 3. provide the organizers with the internal data produced by their systems during the competition as will be specified by the reviewers; provide the documentation describing the deployment of their system, as requested by the organizers: the data will be published on the EvAAL website. The winner(s) of the competition will be announced at a special session of the AAL forum, a major event in the field of Ambient Assisted Living in Europe. A prize will be awarded to the best entries. We encourage submissions from both academia and industry (there are no restrictions on the composition of competing teams) with the aim of seeking innovative localization and activity recognition solutions for AAL applications.
