Novel mechanisms are required in pervasive computing which should integrate QoI, network QoS, computational QoS, security, and a user's Quality of Experience (QoE), which will be influence by the application goals and the pervasive environment in which the application is utilized. The objective of this workshop is to provide a forum to exchange ideas, present results, share experience, and enhance collaborations among researchers, professionals, and application developers in various aspects of QoI and QoS in wireless sensor networks for pervasive computing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Workshop on Managing Ubiquitous Communications and Services (MUCS 2011) URL: http://ubiquitous-management.org/mucs/ Ubiquitous Communications and Services, as evidenced in pervasive computing and smart space applications, present significant management challenges for successful delivery of highly adaptive services across heterogeneous networks, mobile networks, ad-hoc networks, middleware, applications and devices. Such challenges include: managing user centric services and context services, extreme distribution and scalability, extensive system & network & semantic heterogeneity, ad hoc formation and disassociation of systems and services, intelligent support for user centric applications. Today's management systems need to keep pace with the complexity, heterogeneity and automation required by the pervasive computing vision. In a logical - and rapid progression - many social communities are now going mobile, using smart phones or other wireless devices, often in parallel to stationary PCs. A recent com study revealed that in 2009 already 30% of smartphone users accessed social networks via their mobile devices. As a result, Collaboration and social networking functionality is more and more tied together and creates a new social interaction experience for the participants. This experience becomes more and more pervasive since social networking platforms and applications are available on a large set of computing devices, being usable at any time and any place. The aim of the PerCol workshop is to bring together researchers from the areas of mobile and pervasive computing, social networking, and collaboration to explore the research challenges, potentials and business perspective of future pervasive interaction based on social networking technology. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Workshop on Pervasive Communities and Service Clouds (PerCoSC 2011) URL: http://dbis.rwth-aachen.de/PerCoSC2011/ The 1st IEEE PerCom Workshop on Pervasive Communities and Service Clouds aims to discuss and present research challenges, state-of-the-art technologies, and advanced research of cloud computing and services to support pervasive communities. Pervasive computing technologies support applications for user communities greatly. These user communities are pervasive communities. Service clouds offer services, applications, platforms and infrastructure with cloud computing technologies in order to enhance computation and data management capacities in pervasive computing environments. The PerCoSC '11 Workshop topics cover a wide spectrum relevant to cloud computing, pervasive computing technologies, and pervasive community services and applications. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Workshop on Sensor Networks and Systems for Pervasive Computing (PerSeNS 2011) URL: http://www.ing.unipi.it/persens/ Wireless sensor networks collect sensing measurements or detect special events, perform node-level processing, and export the combined data from their sensing nodes to the outside world. Sensing, processing and communication are three key elements whose combination in one small device gives rise to countless applications. The focus of this workshop is on how sensor networks can be employed to achieve the vision of pervasive computing, and our goal is to provide a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers and professionals from industry and academia. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Workshop on Middleware and System Support for Pervasive Computing (PerWare 2011) URL: http://perware.uni-mannheim.de/ Designing systems to support pervasive computing poses many challenges. Issues such as mobility, disconnection, dynamic introduction and removal of devices, and merging of the physical environment with the computational infrastructure are common and affect the underlying system infrastructure. Furthermore, different devices might be connected to different networks, with different latency and bandwidth. As a result, the system software must provide mechanisms for handling disconnection, addressing fault tolerance, and adapting to a number of issues related to diversity including heterogeneous device resources. The scale of pervasive computing in terms of the number of devices and services, combined with the lack of a single system administrator, the associated dynamism, and frequent failures requires system services capable of evolving and re-organizing themselves. The goal of PERWARE is to explore these challenges through practical and buildable solutions for system development, deployment, configuration, scaling, and maintenance. As in previous years we aim to gather the principal practitioners and their experiences under one roof to discuss their findings, incite collaboration and move the state of the art forward. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Workshop on SEcurity and SOCial Networking (SESOC 2011) URL: http://www.sesoc.org/ Future pervasive communication systems aim at supporting social and collaborative communications: the evolving topologies are expected to resemble the actual social networks of the communicating users and information on their characteristics can be a powerful aid for any network operation. New emerging technologies that use information on the social characteristics of their participants raise entirely new privacy concerns and require new reflections on security problems such as trust establishment, cooperation enforcement or key management. The aim of this workshop is to encompass research advances in all areas of security, trust and privacy in pervasive communication systems, integrating the social structure of the network as well. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Workshop on Context Modeling and Reasoning (CoMoRea 2011) URL: http://www.nexus.uni-stuttgart.de/COMOREA Context information is a key issue in building pervasive and adaptive applications. This workshop's aim is to advance the state of the art in context modeling and reasoning and also discuss fundamental issues in context processing and management. The goal is to identify concepts, theories and methods applicable to context modeling and context reasoning as well as system-oriented issues related to the design and implementation of context-aware systems. CoMoRea will provide a forum for researchers to present and discuss recent research results and ongoing work. The main goal of the workshop is to gather scientists from these areas together to foster collaboration and sparkle discussion on various aspects of mobile P2P, including but not limited to, mobile users' scenarios and usage cases, overlay design, development and deployment, mobile data dissemination, mobile database management, and location-based information services. The workshop also aims to discuss mobile P2P in various networking environments such as vehicular, cellular and/or large-scale heterogeneous networks. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Workshop on Interdisciplinary Approaches to Pervasive Computing Design (PerDesign 2011) URL: http://www.ece.vt.edu/perdesign/ In pervasive computing, computing and sensing elements are seamlessly integrated with everyday objects. Ideally, the products are so seamlessly integrated into the environment that they disappear, both physically and cognitively; there are no "interfaces" for the devices in the room but instead they proactively adapt to the needs and intentions of the users. But achieving this ideal of seamless integration requires more than engineering a technology problem. The devices must also be culturally acceptable, economically viable, and aesthetically pleasing. Consequently, successful pervasive computing products require a balance of computing, design, and business expertise throughout their development phases. Without this collection of expertise, the product will likely fall short in a critical technical, functional, or market requirement. This workshop will bring together a body of practitioners, researchers and educators who are making inroads into interdisciplinary pervasive computing design. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Workshop on PervasivE Learning, Life, and Leisure (PerEL 2011) URL: http://wwwra.informatik.uni-rostock.de/perel2011/ PerEL 2011 is the successor of six previous workshops at IEEE PerCom, extending the scope from learning to related fields like entertainment or assistive systems. The workshop aims to address the issues of pervasive computing in combination with new forms and possibilities of learning, life, and leisure. Highly mobile, context-aware, and pro-active services provide significant benefit to the users - in terms of simplicity, comfort, transparency, and finally quality of our everyday activities. PerEL 2011 will address technologies, algorithms, tools, architectures, and applications as well as social models and prerequisitions of pervasive learning, life, and leisure. It aims at an examination of future visions in that areas. PerEL 2011 will assemble papers based on two categories: scientific papers, and demos/case studies. Scientific papers are typically driven by technology and present new results of research in at least one of the topics above, associated with a theoretical base and (empirical) verification. With the advent of inexpensive wireless solutions, such as WiMesh, WiFi, Bluetooth, and ZigBee, a number of challenges arise when these protocols are applied to wireless PAN, home networking, wireless LANs, and wireless sensor and mesh networks. This workshop seeks papers describing significant research contributions to the theory, practice, and evaluation of wireless networks for pervasive computing. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Workshop on Smart Environments to Enhance Health Care (SmartE 2011) URL: http://www.health-smarthomes.org/smarte/ A smart environment in the health care context is a residential or other setting equipped with a set of advanced electronics, sensors and automated devices specifically designed for care delivery, remote monitoring, early detection of problems or emergency cases and promotion of residential safety and quality of life. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are utilized to allow various populations including citizens with chronic conditions, disabilities, older adults and families to live independently in their preferred environment.
