The purpose of a workshop is to provide participants with the opportunity to present and discuss novel research ideas on active and emerging topics of knowledge discovery and data mining. A workshop should also support the interaction and feedback among topic specialists from academia, industry and government. A WORKSHOP MAY BE ORGANIZED AROUND INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS IN A PARTICULAR DOMAIN AND THE CHALLENGES THIS DOMAIN POSES (SUCH AS THE NETFLIX WORKSHOP FOR RECOMMENDATION SYSTEMS) Workshops that include a challenge problem, such as the one on time series classification that took place in 2007, are encouraged. A session with papers that address a challenge complements the more diverse sessions with regular papers and improves the potential for discussion. Because such challenges require extra time to plan, we may be willing to provide early notice of acceptance. The organizers of approved workshops are required to announce the workshop and call for papers, gather submissions, conduct the reviewing process and decide upon the final workshop program. They must also prepare an informal set of workshop proceedings to be distributed with the registration materials at the conference. They may choose to form organizing or program committees for assistance in these tasks. Panel proposals should address emerging, controversial and critical issues in data mining that would likely to have a lasting impact on the field and would also lead to exciting discussions and debates. A mix of industry, academic and government participants is encouraged. For this year's conference we are interested in addressing new topics, particularly centered around human issues related to data mining (e.g., privacy, ethics, cultural differences, applications and implications of data mining on end users, SOCIETAL BENEFITS, ECONOMIC IMPACTS etc.). Proposal Details Panel proposals should be no more than four pages long and should include the following: * Title of the panel * The topic and issues to be discussed in the panel * Name, affiliation, and contact information for the panel organizer * Names and affiliations of up to four panelists (in addition to the panel organizer) who have made a commitment to participate * List of 10 questions that the panel organizer will ask the panelists * Brief biography of each participant IMPORTANT: the KDD 09 panels will be summarized in a paper that will be published in the conference proceedings. Therefore, the panel organizer will be requested to collect from the panelists, in writing, the responses to some of the questions well in advance of the conference. The conference panel chair (A. Jaimes) will collect the materials and work with the panel organizers selected to produce the paper. International Workshop on Data Management for Wireless and Pervasive Communications (DMWPC 2009) http://www-nishio.ist.osaka-u.ac.jp/conf/dmwpc2009/ [AIM and SCOPE] The tremendous advances in wireless communication and mobile computing technologies have created a new computing and communication environment that provides services anytime and anywhere for everyone. Such an environment enables users to access a wide range of services and applications using a large variety of mobile and ubiquitous devices (e.g., cell phones, handheld computers, and so on). In order to accelerate this trend in the future, further progresses of the researches on wireless and pervasive computing, especially on data management, are necessary. The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the current researches and future research directions related to this hot research area. Workshops provide a forum for discussing areas of special interest within pervasive computing with like-minded researchers and practitioners. Workshops afford participants the opportunity to examine an area with a selected focus in an open environment for the free exchange of perspectives. We therefore encourage having an international team of organizers for a workshop who are from different institutions and represent a variety of perspectives. We aim for a balanced workshop program offering a diverse set of themes. Because of the unique opportunity for discussion this forum offers, we encourage workshop plans that emphasize interactive components, group activities, and discussion over those that focus on individual talks. Organizers should be active themselves in the field in which they propose a workshop. All listed organizers are expected to attend those workshops they are organizing; i.e., do not include a potential organizer who may not be present at the workshop. Any change to the workshop organization team must be submitted in writing at least ten days prior to the position paper deadline for individual workshops (January 31, 2009). Format: Give a description of the proposed workshop format, including the target number of participants, planned activities (such as introductions, invited talks, breakout group activities, demos, general discussion), as well as how these activities address the workshop objectives. Preference will be given to proposals for activities designed to fuel discussion and interaction among participants; workshops consisting solely of paper presentations are discouraged. Soliciting Submissions: Indicate how you plan to attract submissions and/or participants.
