I will briefly discuss the main features of GeoDec and show some demonstrations of the system. Then, I will focus on one specific decision making query type within GeoDec that we introduced recently, termed “Spatial Skyline Queries (SSQ)”. Given a set of data points P and a set of query points Q, an SSQ retrieves those points of P which are not dominated by any other point in P considering their distances to query points in Q. I present one of our algorithms, VS2, to address SSQ and show some experimental results. The main intuition and novelty behind our approach is that we exploit the geometric properties of the SSQ problem space to avoid the exhaustive examination of all the point pairs in P and Q. Bio. Cyrus Shahabi is currently an Associate Professor and the Director of the Information Laboratory (InfoLAB) at the Computer Science Department and also a Research Area Director at the NSF's Integrated Media Systems Center (IMSC) at the University of Southern California. He received his B.S. in Computer Engineering from Sharif University of Technology in 1989 and then his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Southern California in May 1993 and August 1996, respectively. He has two books and more than hundred articles, book chapters, and conference papers in the areas of databases, GIS and multimedia. Dr. Shahabi's current research interests include Geospatial and Multidimensional Data Analysis, Peer-to-Peer Systems and Streaming Architectures. He is currently an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems (TPDS) and on the editorial board of ACM Computers in Entertainment magazine. He is also a member of the steering committees of IEEE NetDB and the general co-chair of ACM GIS 2007. He serves on many conference program committees such as VLDB 2008, ACM SIGKDD 2006 to 2008, IEEE ICDE 2006 and 2008, SSTD 2005 and ACM SIGMOD 2004. Dr. Shahabi is the recipient of the 2002 National Science Foundation CAREER Award and 2003 Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). CCLQA and CLIR share the same set of questions/topics, and participation is welcome to test (1) end-to-end QA, or (2) CLIR or IR module only using either original natural language questions, or analyzed queries containing question types. IR modules will be evaluated both IR itself and effectiveness in QA. CCLQA and IR focusing to specific types of questions is new for NTCIR. And we would like to know "What kind of IR mechanism would be the best for what kind of QA mechanism?", "What kind of combination is the best?", etc. * Cluster 2: Information Access to User-Generated Contents http://kde.ics.tut.ac.jp/~seki/ntcir_cl2/ CLIR-B: http://ntcir.nii.ac.jp/index.php/CLIRB/ MOAT: http://ntcir.nii.ac.jp/index.php/Table/MOAT/ This cluster consists of "Cross-Lingual Information Retrieval for Blog (CLIR-B)" task and "Multilingual Opinion Analysis Task (MOAT)". These use a newly crawled blog corpus of Chinese, Japanese and English, which including both blog posts and the comments for them; Topics will be shared by the tasks. CLIR has been investigated in NTCIR from the beginning, but Blog is a new document genre for NTCIR. CLIR for Blog shall be an informational task to search opinionated documents relevant to each topic. Opinion Analysis Task tests the ability of the system to automatically identify relevance and opinionatedness of each sentences in the relevant documents, opinion holder, polarity and stakeholder (target of the opinion). It is targeting to evaluate the technologies to enhance the information access for Patent, which were investigated in the past NTCIRs. Patent Translation will conduct both intrinsic and extrinsic evaluation. Intrinsic evaluation consists of automatic evaluation using a metrics like BLEU and human judgments. Extrinsic evaluation adopts CLIR-task based evaluation, i.e., the contribution machine translation for CLIR will be tested. Patent Mining task targets cross-genre information access between patents and scientific papers. Abstracts of conference papers are used as "topics" and the systems are requested to provide appropriate International Patent Classification (IPC) classes. It can be done as automatic categorization of paper abstracts to IPC classes or as a cross-genre retrieval from conference papers to patents. * Multi-modal Summarization of Trends (MuST): TBA Automatic identification and extraction of numeric information related to the trends of a topic, and way of visualization will be investigated and evaluated. All submissions should be in English. Submission of a paper should be regarded as an undertaking that, should the paper be accepted, at least one author will attend the conference to present the work. Authors are required to submit a paper title and short abstract (about 100 words) before submitting the paper. Paper submission will be electronic through the APWeb08 Web site. Papers should be submitted in LNCS (Lecture Notes in Computer Science) format (style files are available at LNCS Authors Instructions) as PostScript or PDF files and may not exceed 12 pages. PUBLICATION The proceedings will be published by Springer-Verlag in the LNCS series, one volume for main conference and one volume for workshops (pending for approval). In addition to technical contributions, APWeb08 invites proposals for workshops, panels, tutorials, industry presentations. For workshops, APWeb'08 will provide administrative support for workshop room booking, registration, and publication.
