This ubiquitous intelligence (UI) will change the computing landscape because it will enable new breeds of applications and systems to be developed; the realm of computing possibilities will be significantly extended. By embedding digital intelligence in everyday objects, our workplaces, our homes and even ourselves, many tasks and processes could be simplified, made more efficient, safer and more enjoyable. Ubiquitous computing, or pervasive computing, composes these many "smart things/u-things" to create the environments that underpin the smart world. A smart thing can be endowed with different levels of intelligence, and may be context-aware, active, interactive, reactive, proactive, assistive, adaptive, automated, sentient, perceptual, cognitive, autonomic and/or thinking. Intelligent/smart things is an emerging research field covering many disciplines. A series of grand challenges exist to move from the world of ubiquitous computing with universal services of any means/place/time to the smart world of trustworthy services with the right means/place/time. UIC-07 is a successor of the 1st Int'l Workshop on Ubiquitous Smart Worlds (USW-05, Taipei, Mar. 2005), the 2nd Int'l Symposium on Ubiquitous Intelligence, Smart Worlds (UISW-05, Japan, Dec. 2005) and the 3rd Int'l Conference on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing (UIC-06, Three Gorges, China, Sept. 2006). It offers a forum for researchers to exchange ideas and experiences in developing intelligent/smart objects, environments, and systems as well as discuss various personal/social/physical issues faced by UI and smart worlds. JCDL encompasses the many meanings of the term "digital libraries", including (but not limited to) new forms of information institutions; operational information systems with all types of digital content; new means of selecting, collecting, organizing, retrieving and distributing digital content; digital preservation and archiving; and theoretical models of information media, including document genres and electronic publishing. Participation is sought from all parts of the world and from the full range of disciplines and professions involved in digital library research and practice, including computer science, information science, librarianship, archival science and practice, museum studies and practice, technology, medicine, social sciences and humanities. All domains---academic, government, industry, and others---are encouraged to participate as presenters or attendees. ------------------------------------------------------------ VENUE The conference will be held in Vancouver, regularly ranked as one of the world's most livable cities. Papers must be in English with a limit of 10 pages (approximately 5000 words) for full papers and 2 pages for short papers. All papers must be original contributions (i.e., have not been previously published or currently under review for publication elsewhere). All contributions are to be submitted in electronic form via the JCDL 2007 submission web page. Panels Panels provide opportunities for experts in complementary areas to present multiple, contrasting viewpoints on compelling topics. Successful panel proposals involve a controversial or emerging topic, and articulate and enthusiastic panelists with differing perspectives. Panel proposals should consist of: (1) a title and 1-page extended abstract explaining the topic and goals of the panel; (2) a list of individual presenters and viewpoints; and (3) contact information for the organizer, moderator, and panelists. Panels typically have 3-4 members and a single moderator. All contributions are to be submitted in electronic form via the JCDL 2007 submission web page. Posters and Demonstrations Posters permit presentation of late-breaking results in an informal, interactive manner. Poster proposals should consist of a title, 1-page extended abstract, and contact information for the authors. Accepted posters will be displayed at the conference and may include additional materials, space permitting. Abstracts of posters will appear in the proceedings. Demonstrations showcase innovative digital libraries technology and applications, allowing you to share your work directly with your colleagues in a high visibility setting. Demonstration proposals should consist of a title, 1-page extended abstract and contact information of the authors. Abstracts of demonstrations will appear in the proceedings. Tutorials are intended to present a single topic in detail over either a half day or a full day. But in order to realize their advantages, it requires the security services and applications to be suitable for WPE. If they are realized, a user will be able to remotely access and control all information and web appliances in the workplace as well as at home and office, and easily and conveniently use various services to enable working from home, remote education, remote diagnosis, virtual shopping, network gaming, and portal & high quality VOD with no limitations on space and time. Our workshop is intended to foster the dissemination of state-of-the-art research in the area of secure WPE including security models, security systems and application services, and novel security applications associated with its utilization. Also, this workshop offers the possibility to discuss protocols and protocol characteristics with those people that are using them for solving their scientific problems. Developers are able to show their products (or research prototypes) to potential users, while users can pose their request to Developers. Imlay, Jr. Chair in Software College of Computing Georgia Institute of Technology ABSTRACT Denial of Information (DOI) was introduced as an information analog of Denial of Service attacks. A DOI attack consists of the injection of noise or misleading information to make it more difficult, expensive, or time-consuming to find the real answer in a large and evolving data set. Well known problems that are examples of DOI include: email spam, web spam, and blog spam. We will discuss the technical challenges in DOI defense, focusing on the adversarial learning problem, where the defense (e.g., a statistical learning filter such as Na・e Bayesian or Support Vector Machine) must take input from the adversary (the spammer). There is no known general solution to the adversarial learning problem and we discuss the limitations of retraining techniques that can only alleviate the problem. At the same time, we show that (contrary to expectations) it is possible to defend statistical filters for email spam against camouflage attacks, ]where legitimate tokens are mixed into spam messages. We will also discuss other areas susceptible to DOI and some of the progress made in these other areas. -------------------------- Biography of Calton Pu Calton Pu was born in Taiwan and grew up in Brazil. He received his PhD from University of Washington in 1986 and served on the faculty of Columbia University and Oregon Graduate Institute. Currently, he is holding the position of Professor and John P. Imlay, Jr. Chair in Software at the College of Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology. He is currently working on three areas. First, he is using automated code generation techniques to automate and ensure the correct deployment of large scale N-tier applications in the Elba project. Second, he is investigating software and statistical techniques to defend against Denial of Information attacks in areas such as email and web spam. Third, he is working on the application of specialization and other techniques to ensure the reliability, trust, and security of system and application software. He has been the principal investigator of the Infosphere, Synthetix, and Immunix projects, with technical contributions such as Epsilon Serializability, Reflective Transaction Framework, and Continual Queries over the Internet. His collaborations include applications of these techniques in scientific research on macromolecular structure data, weather data, and environmental data, as well as in industrial settings. In this talk, we investigate the problem of selecting k skyline points so that the number of points, which are dominated by at least one of these k skyline points, is maximized. We first present an efficient dynamic programming based exact algorithm in a 2d-space. Then, we show that the problem is NP-hard when the dimensionality is $3$ or more and it can be approximately solved by a polynomial time algorithm with the guaranteed approximation ratio 1 - 1/e. To speed-up the computation, an efficient, scalable, index-based randomized algorithm is developed by applying a probabilistic counting technique. A comprehensive performance evaluation demonstrates that our randomized technique is very efficient, highly accurate, and scalable. (Joint work with Yidong Yuan, Qing Zhang, and Ying Zhang) Short bio Xuemin Lin is an Associate Professor (reader) in the School of Computer Science and Engineering, the University of New South Wales. He has been the head of database research group since 2001. Before joining UNSW, Xuemin held various academic positions at University of Queensland and University of Western Australia. He also taught at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2000. Dr. Lin got his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Queensland in 1992 and his BSc in Applied Math from Fudan University in 1984. During 1984-1988, he studied for PhD in Applied Math at Fudan University. His current research interests lie in data streams, approximate query processing, data streams, spatial data analysis, and graph visualization.
