The 25th International Conference on Asia-Pacific Digital Libraries (ICADL 2023)
December 4 - December 7, 2023
Taipei, Taiwan
(Onsite face-to-face conference, allowing those who cannot attend to present their papers online)
Hosted by National Taiwan Normal University and National Central Library
In collaboration with Asia-Pacific Chapter of iSchools (AP-iSchools)
In collaboration with Asia-Pacific Library and Information Education and Practice (A-LIEP)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The International Conference on Asia-Pacific Digital Libraries (ICADL), which started in Hong Kong in 1998 and over the years traveled many countries in the Asia-Pacific region, is a major digital library conference. Along with JCDL and TPDL, ICADL is held annually as one of the three top venues for connecting digital library, computer science, and library and information science communities. This year, ICADL 2023 will be held from December 4th to 7th, 2023 at the National Central Library in Taipei, Taiwan as an onsite face-to-face conference; however, for those who cannot attend, ICADL 2023 will allow them to present their papers online and join sessions.
ICADL 2023 will be co-located with the 11th Asia-Pacific Conference on Library Information Education and Practice (A-LIEP 2023; https://a-liep.org) and the annual meeting of Asia-Pacific chapter of iSchools (AP-iSchools; https://ischools.org/) under a collective title “2023 International Forum on Data, Information, and Knowledge for Resilient and Trustworthy Digital Societies” (the International Forum hereafter). Thus, ICADL 2023 will provide an excellent international forum for researchers from not only Asia-Pacific regions but also all over the world to meet people with different backgrounds but common research interests to exchange their cutting-edge knowledge, experience and practices in various relevant issues in digital libraries, Library and Information Science (LIS), and other related fields.
The theme for ICADL 2023 is "Leveraging Generative Intelligence in Digital Libraries: Towards Human-Machine Collaboration". As generative artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining widespread use, it has the potential to positively and negatively impact digital libraries and their stakeholders. This conference welcomes papers that explores the role of generative AI in digital libraries and other information intensive environments.
Proceedings of ICADL 2023 are going to be published by Springer as an LNCS volume, which is indexed by Scopus. This year, we have the following four submission categories: full papers, short papers, practice papers, and demo/poster papers.
The Best Paper and the Best Student Paper will be awarded by the Program Committee and selected among the accepted full papers. Candidates for the Best Student Paper award should have students as first authors. Selected papers will be invited for a special issue to be published with the International Journal on Digital Libraries (IJDL), published by Springer.
In order to provide young scholars with guidance from mentors and establish networking opportunities among them, a doctoral colloquium will be held in the International Forum. In addition, if there is any interest in organizing workshops, tutorials, and panel sessions in the International Forum, we will consider them on request. Please contact the conference organizers (To: Prof. Hao-Ren Ke (clavenke(a)ntnu.edu.tw)) with your proposal (including title, background and purposes, topics, workshop/tutorial/panel structure, organizers). Information about accepted events will be put on the website of the International Forum.

■1■ WWW 2023 参加報告
Xiaotian Lu,佐藤 竜馬(京都大学)
(1) WWW2023 について(Lu)
Topics of the conference is comprehensive and accepted a wide range of
web-related research. There are 11 research tracks in total, and the
research topics of different tracks are quite different. The largest
track is "Social Network Analysis and Graph Algorithms" with 71 accepted
papers, and the smallest track is "Crowdsourcing and Human Computation"
with only 7 accepted papers (including mine). The acceptance rate of all
tracks is around 20%, and there is no obvious difference in difficulty.
AI-related research is the most popular field at the conference. In
addition to AI research, there are also social science-related research,
such as social surveys, economics and other research that have nothing
to do with AI.
Among the countries that submitted papers, China was the most submitted
948 papers, followed by the United States with 415 submissions, and all
other countries had less than 100 submissions. All research track papers
are oral presentation, and most papers are 7 minutes for speech + 3
minutes for questions. Approximately 10% of papers will be selected for
Spotlight, with about 20 minutes for the presentation.
(2) 研究紹介 Multiview Representation Learning from Crowdsourced Triplet
Comparisons(Lu)
Our paper is:

Multiview Representation Learning from Crowdsourced Triplet Comparisons.
accepted for the "Crowdsourcing and Human Computation" track.
Crowdsourcing is an efficient and economical approach to applying human
intelligence, for example, collecting label annotations. However,
collecting labels can become difficult in some cases. For example,
fine-grained classification datasets such as the Stanford dog breeds.
We can change the task of asking about the category to asking about the
similarity. Triplet similarity tasks ask crowd workers to answer the
following question, i.e., "Which two objects among A, B, and C are more
similar?". Triplet similarity lead to a new problem and it is our
motivation. An object may have multiple attributes. Humans would thus
naturally compare them differently in terms of different attributes. In
this study, we refer to these characteristics as " multiview". In
this research, we add multiple branches to the neural network, in which
each branch corresponds to a view and allow different workers to choose
different views for different tasks.
It is my pleasure to present our research at the Web Conference. Our
paper was once rejected by AAAI 2023 before submission. After seeing
that the Web Conference has a specific crowdsourcing track, we chose
to submit to the Web Conference.

(1) ECIR 2023 report
The 45th European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR) took place
in Dublin, Ireland from 2nd to 6th April, 2023.
In total, 489 papers were submitted to the different tracks. The final
program included 65 full papers (29% acceptance rate),
41 short papers (27% acceptance rate), 19 demonstration papers (66%
acceptance rate), as well as 12 reproducibility papers (63% acceptance
rate), 10 doctoral consortium papers (56% acceptance rate), and 13
invited CLEF papers.
The keynote talks in this year were given by Mounia Lalmas (Spotify),
Tetsuya Sakai (Waseda University), and the winner of the BCS IRSG
Karen Sparck Jones Award in 2023, Yang Wang (University of California,
Santa Barbara). There were also 8 workshops and 7 tutorials provided.
The best paper award was given to our paper titled "Temporal Natural
Language Inference: Evidence-based Evaluation of Temporal Text Validity"
(by Taishi Hosokawa, Adam Jatowt, and Kazunari Sugiyama). The
conference this year was quite large with several hundred participants.
Fortunately, the weather was sunny most of the time, which is not always
the case in Ireland.Dublin is quite a lively city with lots of
entertainment places, and a strong whisky and beer (Guinness) drinking
culture.
The next ECIR conference will be held in Glasgow, Scotland with Graham
McDonald, Craig Macdonald and Iadh Ounis (all from University of Glasgow)
as General Chairs.

The 2nd Workshop on User-Centric Narrative Summarization of Long Videos (NarSUM)
(In conjunction with ACM MM 2023, Ottawa, Canada)
===============================================================================
Workshop website: https://narsum.cf/
With video capture devices becoming widely popular, the amount of
video data generated per day has seen a rapid increase over the past
few years. Browsing through hours of video data to retrieve useful
information is a tedious and boring task. Video Summarization
technology has played a crucial role in addressing this issue. It is a
well-researched topic in the multimedia community. However, the focus
so far has been limited to creating summary to videos which are short
(only a few minutes).
This workshop aims to call for researchers on relevant background to
focus on novel solutions for user-centric narrative summarization of
long videos. Specifically, the goal is to provide the users with
meaningful information and insights from long input videos,
potentially captured from multiple cameras. Since the generated output
of any video summarization task will be finally consumed by humans, it
is also important to have an element of storytelling, where the
resulting summary is presented in the form of a narrative for humans
to understand easily. This workshop will also cover other important
aspects of video summarization research like what is "important" in a
video, how to evaluate the goodness of a created summary, etc.
--------------------------------------------------
TOPICS OF INTEREST (including but not limited to)
--------------------------------------------------
* Summarization of single/multiple long videos
* Action and scene graph generation from videos
* Narrative summary and video storytelling
* Datasets for long video summarization
* Novel evaluation criteria/metrics
* Novel application of long video summarization
* Open challenges in video summarization
* Privacy preserved video summarization

URL: https://icadl.net/icadl2023

Short Paper Call for Participation
IEEE VIS 2023 solicits submissions in a short paper format. The Short Papers committee welcomes submissions describing original work. The work should focus on concise research contributions, incremental work such as follow-up extensions, evaluations of existing methods, replication studies, or exploratory work. The committee also welcomes papers describing new systems or tools that offer practical value.
Short Papers often fall into one or more of five main categories: technique or algorithm, system or tool, application or design study, empirical study, theory, or model. The contributions of a short paper should be commensurate with the nature of the paper. Technique or algorithm papers should provide clear yet concise technical contributions. System or tool papers should state the value, articulate the target audience, and make an effort toward accessibility (e.g., software release). Papers focusing on visualization applications or design studies should demonstrate lessons learned or insights gleaned for visualization research on which future contributors can build. Empirical study papers should justify the validity and importance of the results, including, where appropriate, the definition of hypotheses, tasks, data sets, the rigorous collection and examination/analysis/coding of data, the selection of subjects and cases, as well as validation, discussion, and conclusions.
Theory or model papers should illuminate how visualization techniques complement and exploit properties of human vision and cognition, as well as how researchers conduct effective and rigorous visualization studies.
The short paper submission deadline is April 30, 2023, creating an opportunity to showcase late-breaking research results.
Important Dates:
- Submission Deadline: April 30, 2023 (no separate abstract deadline)
- Notification: June 15, 2023
- Submission of Camera-Ready Final Version: August 1, 2023 (tentative)
All deadlines are at 11:59pm (23:59) AoE Anywhere on Earth (AoE) (new for 2023).
